After enjoying a chill night in Comitán (another Pueblo Mágico), a little gassed from all the hiking I did the previous two days in Tziscao, I grabbed my bag and headed to El Chiflón ($30 pesos and 45-minutes to get there; $30 pesos admission), which ended up exceeding expectations, big time. I loved it…and I almost didn’t go because I figured that even a nice waterfall would not be worth it after being at Vic Falls. But it was much more than a really cool cascade, so I was wrong.
It’s a place you can spend all day at, hiking up to the top of several waterfalls – Velo de Novia being the most impressive with it’s 150 meter drop – zip-lining (only $150; had to do it!), chilling in the clear blue waters, or enjoying a waterside bbq, as they have a lot of grills and palapas along the banks.
It bugged me that I was ill-prepared and didn’t pack some beers and a good meal to enjoy there (as the few families in attendance did). But the restaurant was decent and affordable, and I got a kick out of helping translate for a trio of Israeli girls whose Spanish was just a good as the waiter’s English.
Since I was passing through and carrying big blue, I was glad that they let me store my bag at the front desk while I explored a bit.
Definitely recommend El Chiflón if you are in Chiapas; a great place to go enjoy a warm day in some really nice blue waters. I’d totally go back…with some friends and a cooler full of good stuff next time, if I could.
