The idea of going on a RTW trip has been simmering since my Salt Lake days. After jaunts to a half dozen countries, I realized that seeing the world two weeks at a time (the American way!) would not cut it. I eventually wound up in South Africa for about six weeks and it gave me a sense of what a more extensive trip would allow, further cementing the thought. Life didn’t let it happen when I wanted it to, but better late than never.
On December 28th, I decided that, after enjoying one more summer in Seattle, I would go.
There are a few reasons that motivated me to go on a RTW trip through summer 2017. Some are new, some are old, but all were involved in my decision to put my career on pause, sell most of what I own, and leave a city I absolutely love in order to accomplish a dream.
Yes, it’s a big departure from the “norm” and a risk (a helluva résumé gap with a great story!). It’s decision that has generated many questions, drawn doubters and dissuaders, but, also, encouragement. And it’s not a cheap proposition, but I’d rather die halfway through this trip than halfway through an MBA, wishing I had done the former (though I wouldn’t mind finding the fountain of youth while traveling, avoiding catastrophe, and living for a long damn time).
Putting the goal on paper is one thing; actually doing what it takes to get there, is another story. Sacrifices had to be made on a personal, professional, and financial level. It was hard as hell at times. But there was a bigger picture, and I’m confident it will all be worth it.
Here’s why I’m going to travel a little bit:
1. I fell in love with it in 2002. There’s something fantastic about being in new surroundings and not understanding anyone or anything (an effort and a smile go a long way!), getting completely lost, disconnecting from devices and connecting with culture, developing a deeper appreciation for fellow human beings, and learning things that you never would have if you hadn’t left home. They say travel is one of the few things you buy that make your richer. And it’s absolutely true.
2. I was stuck in neutral and needed a change. Plus, I had a particularly bad case of wanderlust. That combination made it clear to me that this was the right time to make it happen.
3. No debt. No kids. No future ex. Hakuna Matata.
4. I’m a student of life and want to get out of my comfort zone and be challenged.
5. Cancer took my good friend Mike from us last year. He was a year younger than I, and someone who lived life with so much gusto! I truly miss him. His death had a profound impact on me; it was a major catalyst in my decision to YOLO (I’m probably too old to say that) and go to Brazil for the World Cup last year, as well as finally man up and go on this trip. Because of Mike I learned just how quickly things can change and how precious life is. Holding someone you love as they die changes you in a way that few things can. The clock is always ticking. Life is ephemeral. And I want to make it a great journey.
6. Travel is a great reality check and a reminder that I’m fortunate. Every time I visit a developing nation, I’m reminded of how, despite things being far from perfect at home, nor being a millionaire, I’m very fortunate and should be thankful of what I do have…which is plenty. And plenty more than most people have. Consistently, some of the nicest, most humble, happiest people I have met, are those who have the least. I’m excited to have the time to help others during this trip and do something to make a difference, however small.
7. I left Mexico when I was ten and a half. I want to go back to my roots, explore more of the homeland, spend time with family, and improve my Spanish.
8. I’m 35. Old enough to appreciate the journey. Young enough to enjoy it. Now or never.
9. I’m a simple man. I prefer priceless memories to pricey things.
10. I read The Hobbit & all The Lord of the Rings books this year. And what a fantastic decision it was, even after seeing all the movies multiple times. The marvelous narrative inspired me and reinforced my belief that leaving the comforts of home and going on an adventure is a good idea. I won’t be doing it barefoot, though.
11. Growing up, I wanted to be an archeologist. It didn’t happen, but I definitely have a little Indiana Jones in me, which explains why many of my trips have had an archeological twist (Teotihuacán, Machu Picchu, Angkor Wat, everywhere in Egypt, Petra, Tikal, etc). I’m excited to explore some more “old rocks,” as a friend once called them, over the next few months.
12. The third universal language: Soccer. Besides math and music, it’s truly the one thing that is understood (and beloved!) worldwide. While there’s no World Cup to check out during this trip, there will be plenty of high-level (and not-so-high-level) soccer being played throughout my journey. The idea of making it to the stadium a few times, sharing 90 minutes or more with locals, and taking in their traditions (and drinks!), puts a smile on my face.
There’s still a lot I need (and want) to do here in the upper-left USA before I go. From seeing some games, to hitting shows, kicking it on the dock, eating good food, chilling at the park, enjoying a few final drops of craft beer, to closing out strong at work, becoming an expert seller on craigslist, touching up this website, and doing test packs on my 50 liter bag and 2-door VW. Whew.
The journey begins November 21st, when I leave Seattle and roadie to Vegas. And I’m looking forward to catching up with friends and fam before I fly to Mexico City December 1st.
It’s a bittersweet departure, and I’m going later and less fit than I wanted to, but I’m excited!
Onward!
This is fantastic news. Have a great time! Looking forward to watching your journey unfold online.
I am so excited for you. If you need some home cooking on your way to Vegas just let me know! Be Safe!!!
